Lanzarote Vacation Accommodation

Lanzarote is one of the most popular holiday destinations in Spain.  Although it is in fact located a long way south of the Spanish mainland – and is part of the Canarian archipelago, which is located around 80 miles off the Atlantic coast of Africa.

The Canaries are divided into two distinct administrative regions.  With Tenerife the lead island and capital of the Western Canaries, which comprise La Gomera, El Hierro and La Palma.  Whilst to the east Gran Canaria is the central hub of the eastern Canaries, which also include Fuerteventura and Lanzarote.

Each island is distinctly different.  With Lanzarote home to a very dry and arid terrain.  Reflecting the fact that there is very little in the way of rainfall here – as the mountains on the island are very low lying.  Whilst the outer fringes of the Sahara are just 100km away.  Creating a desert like climate which is hot by day but which cools quickly come nightfall – especially during the winter months.

The barren feel of the island is further increased by the fact that much of the interior of Lanzarote was obliterated by volcanic eruptions in the 18th century.  With fields of lava wiping out farmland and trees – leaving a lunar like wasteland in its wake. Which is today by far the most popular attraction on the island as a well as a popular location with science fiction film makers.

Accommodation throughout the island in most cases will be in plentiful supply but if you're planning on booking one of the local villas in Lanzarote make sure to book as soon as is practical as the best villas are more likely to go first, and you simply won't want to be the person who is going to be disappointed.

Tourists arrive at the islands only international airport at Arrecife before heading on to their accommodation.  With Lanzarote hotels paying host to about half of all visitors.  Whilst the other 50% of tourists book apartments and villas in Lanzarote.  Favouring the privacy and flexibility of self catering accommodation.

One of the most popular destinations on the island is Playa Blanca, particularly during the winter months.  As it is located at the southern end of the island and enjoys the best climate as a result.  With higher temperatures and more sunshine hours than resorts to the north.

As a result accommodation such as hotels and villas in Playa Blanca are in demand – especially during December and January.  And the resort also offers wonderful beaches – such as the fine stretches of sand at Playa Dorada and Playa Flamingo.  Whilst the awe inspiring sight of the Fire Mountains – Lanzarote´s 300 plus volcanoes – are just a short ten minute drive away.
